nature does it better.......
When I am out in nature, captivated by the intricate systems, interconnections, and physical expressions, I sometimes feel like making art is almost pointless, because nature has already done such a superb job of expressing what I want to share with the world. Other times I am inspired and driven to tap into that natural flow of creativity........
Vine brambles are one of my favorite natural expressions of chaos. The ever changing shore of lake Erie is another beautiful manifestation of chaos/order and constant change. The near symmetry of animal bones, and the amazing mathematical expressions found in plants, seeds, etc..... It is all such a delicious web of life.

Re: nature does it better.......
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 10:53 PMHey Isaac, just think of yourself as a jazz soloist riffing off the beautiful melody that nature has laid down for you.
Vines and brambles are one of my favorites too. As early as I could remember intertwining vines were the doodle I made in the margins of my notes and school papers.
I wonder if they were the inspirations for celtic knot patterns.
Just a musing. -

Re: nature does it better.......
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 4:30 PMFrom what Iv read, celtic knot work on paper was developed by illustrating patterns that were woven in rope, etc... I can defiantly see humans evolving their weaving techniques from Vine brambles. One of my favorite weaving technique is the random weave. You weave a base structure and fill it in by randomly weaving your material around the frame. Now Im very curious how patterned weaving emerged.......
Are there any other visual artists in the tribe? Im curious because I'm wondering if anyone else uses natural forms for inspiration. I do not have much talent when it comes to objective representation of reality, but I think I have a strong ability to convey feelings and imprisons with my work. I am also interested in mapping more subtle aspects, states and experience of reality. I have never been attracted to drawing, and I am not passionate about rendering reality. Creating objects is more like a flow of energy and feeling. Sometimes it is guided by a concept, but often the work just flows together on it's own. This made my undergrad experience in fine art difficult. My way of making art was not always acceptable, but I did learn a lot and grow into many new directions...... ramble.....

Re: nature does it better.......
Wed, July 27, 2005 - 1:53 AMI guess I have to get off my heiny and get a digital camera so I can post some pictures of my work. I realized I have nothing in my photo album.
I do a lot of mixed media and found object work. I like to take a man made object, preferably made from a natural material and reduce it to a more natural state so to speak by weathering or coloring. I really love the tactile qualities color and texture.....
You're right about the celtic knot work graphicly coming from actual knot work, but I just like the visual of seeing the knots nature ties....
I can totally relate to the way a work evolves and flows through you with its own energy-you have to do the art for yourself first and if others can relate or appreciate it -wonderful! -

Wed, July 27, 2005 - 10:01 AMLorelei,
You should defiantly take some pictures of your work. It sounds very intriguing. I have had a digital camera for about four years and for the first two years I had it I took it everywhere with me collecting visual information. Excellent way to collect textures and other wonders of nature.
I love working with found objects natural and manmade, because you can evolve their history with your creative passion. That's one of my favorite aspects about object making. Taking the wires that once fed a house with electricity, and weaving them into a lamp shade or magic wand. It sort of like taking the bones of a dying infrastructure and giving it new life.

Re: nature does it better.......
Sun, August 3, 2008 - 12:51 PMszukalski remarked that simply rendering reality is pretty much "taxidermy". it's nice to learn so you have that experience under your belt, technically speaking, but honestly it isn't moving us forward culturally speaking. every medium is just practice for realizing ideas in a more elaborate medium...and i suppose that progression probably ends with the natural world: right where you started. personally i love tweaking out on tiny tiny oraganic forms and investing them with massive proportional qualities. then ideas often present themselves in a holographic sense. THEN it's time to apply that discipline of rendering. 'fantastic realism' it's been called.

Re: nature does it better.......
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 8:05 PMI too find Nature to be the greatest inspiration for my art.
The study of Sacred Geometry has helped me to form the words and technical intellectual visual language to explain what I feel.
The animated aspect of the natural world around us becomes revealed the deeper one delves into the divine nature of structure, ratio, and proportion in the natural world. The search and love of organic beauty and my innate curiosity have lead me on a path that seems daily, more and more to part the veils of my existence, helping me to re-integrate what I SEE with what I FEEL. Sadly not much of this is taught in the established curriculums of public schools. How different our orientations might be as adults if these "advanced" concepts were taught at the grammar school level...Steiner Schools might teach this stuff I'm not sure...

Re: nature does it better.......
Mon, November 24, 2008 - 7:59 AMI have been thinking a lot about how nature expresses itself in fractal geometries, and we humans surround ourselves with very simple linear geometries. I think existing and growing up in boxy forms that are simple dumb down our psyche in some way, separating us from the natural fractal expressions of nature. Some humans spend most of their existence in simple human made geometries, never truly connecting with the interconnected fractals expressions we arise from......

Fri, May 1, 2009 - 5:03 AMThe patterns you see in plants, other organic shapes, absolutely fascinate me too. I work with patterns too, but certainly agree that the organic forms you encounter in nature are best.
